Mulch Calculator (Metric)
The metric Mulch Calculator uses millimetres, centimetres, metres, or square metres as shown beside each field. It applies volume = length × width × depth, places a complete metric result in the served HTML, and updates locally in the browser. Verify field measurements, local standards, material data, and structural assumptions before construction.
Calculated result
1.35 m³
Spread depth times area gives loose mulch volume, then the bag count divides that volume by the bag size printed on the label. Bag volumes vary by product, so check the label before ordering.

- 27
- Bag volume
- 50 L
- Coverage area

| Primary formula | volume = length × width × depth | Round the final result, not each intermediate value. |
How the mulch calculation works
Enter the job dimensions in the form. The calculator normalizes the values, applies volume = length × width × depth, and updates the main result, supporting values, diagram labels, and print table together.
The first displayed example is calculated during the static build. That makes the formula and a complete numerical result readable in page source, while the browser script handles later input changes.
Worked example
The prefilled values form a complete mulch volume and bag count example. Change one field at a time and compare the updated result with the formula table to catch unit or transcription mistakes.
Common errors to avoid
- Mixing nominal and actual material dimensions.
- Entering diameter where the formula expects radius, or total run where it expects one tread.
- Rounding every intermediate value instead of rounding the final purchase or cut quantity.
- Treating a planning result as a stamped structural design or local-code approval.
Bag and yard coverage
One cubic yard is 27 ft³, so it fills about 13.5 bags of 2 ft³ or 9 bags of 3 ft³. Bulk delivery is normally cheaper above roughly 6 to 8 bags, which is why the calculator reports both the cubic result and the bag count.
| Spread depth | Area covered | 2 ft³ bags needed per 100 ft² |
|---|---|---|
| 1 in (25 mm) | 324 ft² (30 m²) | ≈ 4 |
| 2 in (50 mm) | 162 ft² (15 m²) | ≈ 8 |
| 3 in (75 mm) | 108 ft² (10 m²) | ≈ 13 |
| 4 in (100 mm) | 81 ft² (7.5 m²) | ≈ 17 |
How deep should mulch be spread?
- 2 to 3 in (50 to 75 mm) over established beds is the usual range for weed suppression and moisture retention.
- 1 to 2 in (25 to 50 mm) for fine-textured products, which pack more tightly than coarse bark.
- Keep mulch pulled back from trunks and stems; piling it against bark holds moisture where it causes rot.
- Topping up an existing bed only needs the difference between the current and target depth.
Frequently asked questions
Does the mulch calculator work without JavaScript?
The default worked result, formula, diagram, and result table are included in the served HTML. JavaScript is only needed to recalculate after you change an input.
Which unit should I use?
Use the imperial page for US customary inputs or open the metric twin for millimetres, centimetres, and metres.
Can I use the result for purchasing material?
Use it as a quantity and layout check, then add the stated waste allowance and confirm package coverage, stock dimensions, and field conditions.
Does this replace building code or an engineer?
No. The calculator is a planning aid. Current local code, product documentation, and a qualified engineer govern structural and life-safety decisions.
How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?
About 13.5 bags at 2 ft³ per bag, 9 bags at 3 ft³, or 27 bags at 1 ft³. In metric terms, one cubic metre is about 20 sacks of 50 litres.
How much area does a cubic yard of mulch cover?
About 162 ft² (15 m²) at 2 in deep and 108 ft² (10 m²) at 3 in deep. Divide 324 by the depth in inches to get the coverage in square feet.
Should I order extra mulch?
Beds are rarely perfect rectangles, so measure irregular beds in sections and add each result. A 5 to 10 percent allowance covers settling and uneven edges.
