Paver bedding depth

  • A screeded bedding course is normally 1 in (25 mm) and should not be thicker than 1.5 in (40 mm), because deep sand keeps settling under load.
  • Bedding sand sits on top of a compacted crushed-stone base — calculate that layer separately.
  • Joint sand is ordered from the manufacturer's coverage table, not from this volume result.
  • Add 10 percent for screed loss, wind, and the sand left in the barrow.

How much sand do I need under pavers?

Use a 1 in (25 mm) screeded bedding layer. A 100 ft² patio needs about 8.3 ft³, roughly 0.31 cubic yards, plus an allowance for screed loss.

How much does a cubic yard of sand weigh?

Dry concrete sand is about 2,600 to 2,700 lb (1.3 t) per cubic yard; damp sand is heavier. Check the trailer or truck rating before loading bulk sand.

Can I use this for mortar or concrete sand quantities?

It gives the volume of a sand layer. Mortar and concrete mixes are proportioned by mix ratio, so take the sand share from the mix design rather than from a spread depth.
