How asphalt tonnage is calculated
Paving is ordered by weight, so the volume result has to be converted with a density. Multiply length by width to get the paved area, multiply by the compacted layer depth to get volume, then multiply by the mix density and divide by 2,000 lb to reach US short tons (or by 1,000 kg for tonnes).
Loose asphalt occupies more volume than the finished mat. Enter the compacted thickness the specification calls for; the plant ticket weight already accounts for the loose-to-compacted change.

How many tons of asphalt do I need per square foot?
At a 145 lb/ft³ density, a 2 in mat weighs about 24 lb/ft² (0.012 tons), and a 3 in mat about 36 lb/ft² (0.018 tons). Multiply by the paved area, then confirm the density of the mix being delivered.
Should I enter loose or compacted depth?
Enter the compacted depth. Asphalt loses roughly 20 to 25 percent of its loose thickness during rolling, and paving tickets are written against the finished compacted section.
Does the calculator include the aggregate base?
No. It sizes the asphalt layer only. Calculate the crushed stone or gravel base separately with the gravel calculator and add both to the order.
