How to measure the paintable area
For walls, multiply the room perimeter by the ceiling height, then subtract doors and windows. A standard door is about 21 ft² (2 m²) and an average window about 15 ft² (1.4 m²). Ceilings are simply length × width and are entered as a separate calculation because they usually take a different product.

Turning litres and gallons into cans
- US paint is sold in 1 gallon and 5 gallon units; European paint in 1, 2.5, 5, and 10 litre tins.
- Buying one larger tin usually beats several small ones and keeps the batch colour identical.
- Keep a sealed remainder for touch-ups; batch-matched paint is hard to reorder later.
- Primer is calculated separately and normally covers less area per unit than the topcoat.

How much paint do I need for a 12 × 12 room?
With 8 ft ceilings the walls are about 384 ft² gross, roughly 340 ft² after one door and one window. Two coats at 350 ft²/gal need about 2 gallons, plus separate paint for the ceiling.
How many square feet does a gallon of paint cover?
About 350 to 400 ft² (9 to 10 m²/L) on smooth primed walls. Porous, textured, or previously unpainted surfaces drop that to 200 to 300 ft² per gallon.
Do I need to subtract windows and doors?
Subtract them when they are large or numerous. For a normal room the difference is small, and leaving them in gives a useful allowance for cutting in, roller loss, and touch-ups.
